News FDAP membership applications now available online When FDAP was taken over by SMMGP two years ago, we worked hard to ensure a smooth and immediate transition for all FDAP members and this meant continuing the existing systems of membership and registration. Moving is chaos and once the dust had settled, we were able to have a look around and see what needed refurbishing. A priority was to update the process of registration and accreditation for FDAP members, which was “old-school” in that a form had to be downloaded, printed, completed, and posted to a street address, together with a cheque in payment. Phew! The SMMGP website was also being renewed and it made sense to bring the FDAP information and function into the new combined website, launched in January 2019. This means that FDAP membership applications - including payment - can now all be done online and this improvement has contributed to a big jump in membership applications this year. Why become a member of FDAP? Importantly, FDAP provides the only professional registration body for drug and alcohol workers. Now that FDAP is under the SMMGP umbrella, there is access to expert guidance and free, high quality CPD via the SMMGP Premium Membership programme – all included in the FDAP membership fee. FDAP has affiliation to several Universities that offer addiction graduate courses such as London South Bank University, Bath and University of West London. Our FDAP Assessment Board is drawn from senior lecturers and course leaders at these institutions. We offer Affiliate Membership to providers that brings benefits to nominated employees. All FDAP members benefit from discounts on conference attendances and access to our training. FDAP offers a range of specialist accreditation. Our National Counsellor Accreditation Certificate (NCAC) offers professional certification (externally validated by our Assessment Board) and is for counsellors who work with people who are using alcohol and other drugs problematically, as well as other behavioural addictions. Our Drug and Alcohol Professional Certificate provides a competence-based certification for alcohol and drug workers, including volunteers. The Drug and Alcohol Family Worker certificate (with Adfam) is specifically designed for practitioners who work with families affected by addiction. We are proud of the strides that we have made to refurbish and upgrade the FDAP processes and keep our members happy. FDAP was established, and continues to be, relevant to the field as the professional body that upholds standards of competency and professionalism specific to our sector.
